Do you need a visa to visit Vietnam?

Yes, except you are a citizen of one of the over 20 countries with which Vietnam has a “general visa exemption arrangement”, you need only a valid passport to enter Vietnam as a “temporary visitor”. I want to stay longer in Vietnam, what do I do?

Pre-COVID time, the visa exemption can be extended within Vietnam. However, it cannot be done today.

Those who want to stay longer than allowed period in the visa exemption policy has to do either of these two options:

  • Do a Visa Run: Enter Vietnam with visa exemption, and then leave the country for a neighboring country (such as Thailand, Cambodia, or Laos) when the exemption duration ends and come back with a new visa exemption.
  • Apply for a 90-day Vietnam evisa to enter the country.
