Hanoi Train Street
Overview
Hanoi Train Street is a narrow residential alley in the Hoan Kiem district where the Reunification Express passes within inches of café tables and house fronts, twice a day or more. The main entrance (near 5 Tran Phu) is officially barricaded but café owners along the track may allow access through side routes. A second, less-restricted location on Le Duan Street (Dong Da district) is the recommended option — fewer crowds, easier access, same atmosphere.
Get There
- Train Street 1 (Hoan Kiem): 5 Tran Phu, Hang Bong — 15 minutes walk from the Old Quarter, 20 minutes from Hoan Kiem Lake. Best reached on foot or by Grab.
- Train Street 2 (Le Duan): Ngo 224 Le Duan, Kham Thien, Dong Da — 2.6 km from the Old Quarter, about 10 minutes by Grab or 30 minutes on foot. A Grab motorbike is the quickest option in evening traffic.

The Experience
As train time approaches, café staff clear the tables closest to the track and ask visitors to stand back. Then the train appears — filling the entire alley, horn blaring — and rumbles past with perhaps 30 cm to spare on either side. It is over in seconds, but the tension beforehand and the chaos of the moment makes it one of the most visceral experiences in Hanoi.
The street itself is genuinely residential. Between trains, locals go about their day: cooking, hanging laundry, minding small shops. The café tables go back out, a cold beer arrives, and the alley returns to its quiet rhythm until the next train.
Two Locations
- Train Street 1 — Hoan Kiem (the famous spot): Near 5 Tran Phu, Hang Bong. Main entrances barricaded since 2019; some café owners still allow access through side routes. Check recent reports before visiting.
- Train Street 2 — Le Duan (recommended): Ngo 224 Le Duan, Kham Thien, Dong Da. Less crowded, fewer restrictions, same atmosphere. 2.6 km from the Old Quarter.

Photography Tips
- Arrive 15–20 minutes before a scheduled train to choose your spot
- Evening trains (7:50 PM onwards) offer warm artificial light — dramatic but harder to focus fast
- A wide-angle lens captures the full compression of the alley; a short telephoto compresses the train into the crowd
- Shoot from the side, not from directly on the track — safer and often more interesting framing
- The moments just before the train arrives — locals clearing tables, tourists pressing against walls — can be as compelling as the train itself
Safety Rules
- Stand behind the yellow lines when a train is approaching
- Do not sit or pose on the tracks for photographs
- Do not touch the train as it passes
- Follow all instructions from café owners — they know when to move
- Trains may arrive without advance warning; stay alert
Tips
- Order something at the café — it is a courtesy to the owners who maintain access
- Weekday mornings are quietest; Saturday evenings are busiest
- Prioritise Street 2 (Le Duan) for a more relaxed experience
- The main Hoan Kiem entrance may be closed on the day you visit — have Street 2 as a backup
