Overview

The Mekong Delta is a vast network of river tributaries in southwest Vietnam, stretching between Ho Chi Minh City and the Cambodian border. The Mekong itself begins in the Himalayas and passes through China, Myanmar, Thailand, and Cambodia before splitting into nine branches — the 'Nine Dragons' — as it fans out to the sea here. The result is one of the most fertile regions on earth: more than half of Vietnam's rice and fish comes from the delta, along with 70% of the country's fruit. Life revolves entirely around water — floating markets, canal-side villages, stilt houses, and boat-based trade define daily existence in a way that has changed little for generations. The delta spans 12 provinces and several distinct cultures: Vietnamese, Khmer, Cham Muslim, and Chinese communities all coexist here, each leaving their mark on the food, architecture, and festivals. Too many visitors see the delta on a rushed day trip from HCMC — a pagoda and a floating market — and miss the real depth of the place. Spend at least 2–3 nights to reach Can Tho, cross into the quieter provinces, stay in a canal homestay, and eat your way through the region's extraordinary produce. The dry season (November–April) is the best time to visit; the flood season (September–November) brings a different beauty — submerged forests, lotus ponds, and swamp swimming.

Province names (July 2025): Following Vietnam's administrative reorganisation on 1 July 2025, the Mekong Delta was consolidated from 13 provinces into 6 — five provinces and one centrally governed city (Can Tho). For travellers, the destinations remain the same; only the provincial boundaries and names have changed. Phu Quoc is now in An Giang Province (previously Kiên Giang). My Tho is now in Dong Thap Province (previously Tiền Giang). Ben Tre City is now in Vinh Long Province. Soc Trang City is now part of Can Tho City. Bac Lieu City is now in Ca Mau Province. Chau Doc remains in An Giang Province.

Cai Rang Floating Market (6 km from Can Tho toward Soc Trang) is the largest and most impressive in the delta — hundreds of boats crowd the river from dawn, selling fruit, vegetables, wholesale food, and clothes. Look for what's hanging on the long pole above each boat to see what it's selling. Arrive by 6 AM before the tour groups. The smaller Cai Be Floating Market near My Tho is quieter and easier to reach from HCMC — worth visiting early before trade wraps up by mid-morning. Can Tho is the delta's largest city and cultural heart — a working river city with comfortable hotels, good food, and easy day trips into the surrounding canals. Its Ninh Kieu Wharf is most beautiful at night: jasmine-scented, lined with food stalls, and anchored by a pedestrian bridge topped with giant lotus flowers that shimmer on the river. Vinh Trang Pagoda near My Tho is a stunning fusion of French rococo and Confucian architecture set in bougainvillea gardens — giant bronze bells, incense-shrouded effigies, and two enormous Buddhas in the grounds. Thoi Son Island in the Tien River (45 min by boat from My Tho) is crisscrossed by canals shaded by rambutan, longan, and sapodilla trees — explore by boat, visit the orchards, and relax in hammocks. Sam Mountain near Chau Doc rises from the flat delta plain like an island of rock, ringed by pagodas and offering panoramic views of rice paddies and waterways from the summit. Tra Su Cajuput Forest near Chau Doc is a flooded wilderness reserve best visited September–November — canoe tours wind through leafy waterways past wooden bridges; painted storks and rare waterbirds feed in the shallows at dawn and dusk. Soc Trang is home to the largest Khmer population outside Cambodia, with elaborate Clay and Bat pagodas; the Oc Om Boc festival in November–December is one of the delta's most colourful events.

Transport options to reach Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta is reached from Ho Chi Minh City, which serves as the main gateway — the delta's provinces fan out 60–200 km southwest of the city. By road, Can Tho (the delta's largest city) is 170 km from HCMC — about 3–3.5 hours by express bus from Mien Tay (Western) bus station; Phuong Trang (FUTA) runs frequent departures for around 100,000–150,000 VND. My Tho (the closest delta town, gateway to Ben Tre) is just 70 km from HCMC — 1.5 hours by bus. By air, Can Tho International Airport (VCA) receives domestic flights from Hanoi (~2 hours, Vietnam Airlines and VietJet) and Da Nang, making it possible to fly directly into the delta without passing through HCMC. A taxi from Can Tho Airport to the city centre takes about 20 minutes and costs 100,000–150,000 VND. Most organised tours of the delta depart from Ho Chi Minh City, cover 1–3 days, and include boat transport, meals, and homestay accommodation in the canal villages — this is the easiest way to see multiple provinces without arranging your own transport between them.

A two-day sampan cruise from HCMC drifting through backwater canals, floating villages, and the Cai Be and Cai Ro markets is the single best way to absorb the delta — cabin and dining under palm-thatch canopies, stopping at orchards and village workshops along the way. Cycling in Ben Tre along flat canal-side paths through coconut groves and brick kilns is one of the most peaceful half-days in southern Vietnam.
