Mu Cang Chai

Overview

Mu Cang Chai is a highland area 305 km northwest of Hanoi, set in the valleys below Khau Phạ Pass. Most residents are H'mong, and their terraced paddies climb the hillsides of La Pán Tẩn, Chế Cu Nha and Dế Xu Phình, the three communes whose terraces are protected as a national landscape. There is one rice crop a year. Fields are flooded and planted in May–June, when the water reflects the sky, and turn gold for harvest from mid-September to early October. Autumn days run 18–26°C with clear skies; winter drops to 5–18°C with mist in the valleys.

Administrative note: since the July 2025 province mergers, Mu Cang Chai is part of Lào Cai province. Older maps and guides list it under Yên Bái.

Things to see and do in Mu Cang Chai

Khau Phạ Pass is a roughly 30 km climb between Tú Lệ and Mu Cang Chai and one of the four great passes of the northern mountains; the lookouts near the top face straight down onto the Cao Phạ terraces. Mâm Xôi Hill in La Pán Tẩn is the round hill terraced in rings all the way to the top, the shot on most Mu Cang Chai postcards. Chế Cu Nha has terraces running down to the valley floor and H'mong homestays in the village. Dế Xu Phình has wide, gently curved terraces that are easy to walk between. Lìm Mông is a H'mong village on the slopes below Khau Phạ Pass, looking across the Cao Phạ valley to the Thai stilt houses of Lìm Thái. On the way in, Tú Lệ is a Thai valley known for its sticky rice and hot springs.

Transport options to reach Mu Cang Chai

Mu Cang Chai is 305 km from Hanoi, about 6 hours by road. Sleeper bus (VND 300,000–600,000) leaves from My Dinh bus station and follows National Road 32 through Nghĩa Lộ and Tú Lệ; operators include Hưng Thành Hà Trang, Thế Anh Nghĩa Lộ, Cường Lan and Thảo Nguyên MCC. Private car takes the Nội Bài–Lào Cai expressway, then Hợp Minh and National Road 32; it costs more but picks you up at your hotel. Train SP3 or SP7 runs from Hanoi Station to Yên Bái station (about 4 hours, VND 340,000–540,000), leaving about 100 km to finish by taxi or motorbike. Motorbike riders follow National Road 32 via Sơn Tây, Thanh Sơn, Văn Chấn and Nghĩa Lộ, then climb Khau Phạ Pass; the pass has steep hairpins and fog, so it suits experienced riders only.

Most stays are H'mong homestays in Chế Cu Nha, La Pán Tẩn and Lìm Mông, with a mattress in a shared loft and family dinners. Mu Cang Chai town has small guesthouses near the main road. Tú Lệ, 60 km before Mu Cang Chai, has Thai stilt-house homestays and hot-spring resorts, and many visitors sleep there on the first night. For more comfort, Mu Cang Chai Ecolodge has bungalows facing the terraces. Book ahead for the last two weeks of September, when harvest and the paragliding festival fill every room.

Adventures and activities in Mu Cang Chai

Walking the terraces is the main thing to do. Trails link La Pán Tẩn, Chế Cu Nha and Dế Xu Phình, and a local guide can take you along field paths that don't appear on maps. In late September, paragliders launch from Khau Phạ Pass over the harvest fields during the annual festival, and tandem flights are sold to visitors. Stop in Tú Lệ for the hot springs and a bag of young green sticky rice (cốm) during harvest. A typical 3-day trip goes Hanoi → Nghĩa Lộ → Tú Lệ on day one, Khau Phạ Pass → La Pán Tẩn → Chế Cu Nha on day two, and Dế Xu Phình → Lìm Mông → Hanoi on day three.
