Ha Long Bay

A UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Gulf of Tonkin, Ha Long Bay stuns visitors with emerald-green waters, over 1,600 limestone islands and islets, mysterious caves, and secluded beaches. Located in Quang Ninh province, about 170 km from Hanoi, it is the centrepiece of a wider zone that includes Bai Tu Long Bay to the northeast and Lan Ha Bay to the southwest — all sharing the same dramatic karst seascape.

Overview

Ha Long Bay is Vietnam's most iconic seascape — a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site where more than 1,600 limestone islands and karsts rise from emerald-green water in the Gulf of Tonkin, about 170 km east of Hanoi. The bay stretches across 43,400 hectares and is geologically continuous with Lan Ha Bay to the south and Bai Tu Long Bay to the northeast, all sharing the same dramatic karst topography shaped over 500 million years. The main cruise zone sits between Ha Long city and Cat Ba Island, where the limestone towers are most densely packed and most photographed — the Trong Mai Islet (Fighting Cocks) silhouette is the unofficial symbol of the bay. Most visitors arrive on day or overnight cruises from Hanoi; the sweet spot is a 2-night cruise that lets you get beyond the busiest anchorages into quieter bays and hidden lagoons. Avoid Chinese New Year and major Vietnamese holidays when the bay is at its most crowded.

Attractions

Things to see and do in Ha Long Bay

The bay's limestone geography creates a natural network of caves, beaches, and hidden lagoons. Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave) on Bo Hon Island is the largest and most visited grotto — two vast chambers with extraordinary stalactite formations, best visited early before the day-trip crowds arrive. Thien Cung Cave (Heavenly Palace Cave) is the most ornate, with colourful lit formations and a grand central hall. Luon Cave is best reached by kayak or bamboo rowing boat through a low archway into a secret enclosed lagoon. Titov Island offers a crescent beach and a 427-step climb to a hilltop viewpoint with panoramic bay views — one of the best spots for sunrise. The Trong Mai Islet (two jagged rocks that look like roosters) makes for a classic boat photo. On the outer edges, Bai Tu Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay (accessible via Cat Ba Island) offer the same karst scenery with far fewer boats.

Getting There

Transport options to reach Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay is 170 km from Hanoi — roughly 2.5–3 hours by road. The easiest option is a cruise package that includes return transfer from Hanoi: most operators pick up from Hanoi Old Quarter hotels from 7:30–8:00 AM and return by 6–7 PM, with the drive included in the price. If travelling independently, limousine buses (Duc Phong, Galaxy, Techbus) depart from My Dinh and Nuoc Ngam bus stations every 30–60 minutes from 5:30 AM; the journey takes 2.5–3 hours and costs 150,000–200,000 VND. From Tuan Chau Marina (the main cruise departure point, 12 km west of Ha Long city), a grab or taxi from the bus station costs 100,000–150,000 VND. There is no train to Ha Long — the old line no longer operates. By air, Van Don International Airport (VDO) is 50 km east of Ha Long city and receives domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh City (~2 hours, VietJet and Bamboo Airways) and Hanoi (~40 min, Hai Au Aviation seaplane or short VietJet hop) — a good option if coming from the south or wanting to skip the Hanoi road transfer entirely. A taxi from Van Don Airport to Ha Long city costs around 400,000–500,000 VND (45 min). For private car transfers from Hanoi, our recommended drivers can arrange door-to-door pickups.

Cat Ba Island (the southern gateway to Lan Ha Bay) offers a broader range of budget and mid-range guesthouses from /night, and is increasingly popular as a base for 2–3 day independent kayaking trips.

Experiences

Adventures and activities in Ha Long Bay

An overnight cruise is the defining Ha Long experience. Traditional wooden junks and modern steel ships offer 1–3 night itineraries starting at around /person for a shared deluxe cabin, up to + for luxury 5-star vessels. Most include meals, kayaking, cave entrance fees, and a cooking class. Well-regarded mid-range options include the Cozy Bay Premium Cruise (~/person) and the Ambassador Cruise (~/person, includes cooking class). For a day trip from Hanoi, 6–8 hour packages depart from Tuan Chau Marina or Halong International Cruise Port and cover 2–3 highlights for –100 all-in including transport. Kayaking into hidden lagoons and through low limestone arches is a highlight of any itinerary — ask your cruise operator which routes are available. Sunrise over the bay from your cabin deck, and squid fishing off the stern at night, are the two moments most guests remember longest. For food, Vietnamese seafood lunches are served onboard; in Ha Long city itself, the night market on Vuon Dao Street is the best spot for fresh grilled seafood at local prices.
