Cat Ba

Vietnam's largest island in Lan Ha Bay — limestone karst beaches, national park trekking, and the quieter, less-visited alternative to Ha Long Bay. Ranked among Lonely Planet's ten best beaches in Vietnam.

Overview

Cat Ba Island sits at the southern end of the Ha Long Bay archipelago — 285 km² of limestone karst, dense jungle, white-sand beaches, and fishing communities. The island is the base for exploring Lan Ha Bay, a quieter and less commercialised version of Ha Long Bay with 300-plus limestone islands and emerald water. Lonely Planet ranked Cat Ba among the ten best beaches in Vietnam in 2023.

Cat Ba Town on the island's southern shore is the hub: a working fishing harbour with seafood restaurants, guesthouses, and the Cat Co beaches a short walk east. The island's interior rises into Cat Ba National Park — home to the critically endangered golden-headed Cat Ba langur, with fewer than 70 individuals remaining in the wild. Hospital Cave and Cannon Fort add a wartime history dimension to the island's natural appeal.

Attractions

Things to see and do in Cat Ba

The three beaches of Cat Co (Cat Co 1, 2, and 3) are the island's most accessible swimming spots, each with a different character — Cat Co 1 is the most developed, Cat Co 3 the most secluded. Lan Ha Bay boat tours and kayaking (including sea cave exploration and the secluded Ba Trai Dao beach) are the main reason most visitors stay more than one night. Cat Ba National Park offers jungle trekking to Viet Hai fishing village and langur-watching boat trips.

Adventures and activities in Cat Ba

Lan Ha Bay kayaking is Cat Ba's signature experience — paddling through sea cave passages into hidden lagoons, with the option of camping on Ba Trai Dao beach overnight. Rock climbing on the limestone cliffs of Lan Ha Bay (Tiger Beach and the surrounding karst walls) is a growing activity with several Cat Ba-based operators. The Hospital Cave tour (wartime underground hospital, 45 minutes) and Cannon Fort sunset (panoramic view over Cat Ba Town and the bay) are the best half-day add-ons to a beach and boat itinerary.
