January is one of Cat Ba’s quietest and most rewarding months. The dry-season cool settles over the island — temperatures are mild rather than cold, the skies are clear, and the limestone karst landscape of Lan Ha Bay is at its most atmospheric in the low winter light. Tourist numbers are at their lowest, which means the national park trails, the bay kayaking routes, and the island beaches feel genuinely uncrowded. For hikers and kayakers who want the landscape without the summer crowds, January is the month.
Weather in Cat Ba in January
- Temperature: 14–19°C (57–67°F) — mild and cool; evenings require a layer
- Rainfall: Very low (16% chance) — one of the driest months
- Humidity: 81%
- Wind: 13.5 mph — noticeably breezy
- Daylight: 11 hours
January’s cool temperatures make it excellent for hiking and exploration, but pack a warm layer for evenings and on the water — the bay breeze can be cold at speed on a kayak or cruise boat.
Events in January
- New Year’s Day (1 January): Quiet on Cat Ba; the island’s local restaurants and guesthouses may run small celebrations
- Tet preparation: By late January, the island town begins decorating for Lunar New Year — yellow apricot blossoms and kumquat trees appear in guesthouse doorways
Best Things to Do in Cat Ba in January
Lan Ha Bay
Lan Ha Bay — the southern extension of Ha Long Bay immediately adjacent to Cat Ba Island — is at its most serene in January. Over 300 limestone karst islands rise from the water across the bay, and the January light gives the scenery a muted, painterly quality that summer’s bright sun doesn’t produce. Day cruises and multi-day junk boat tours operate year-round; kayaking through the hidden lagoons inside the hollow karsts is one of the bay’s best experiences and is perfectly comfortable in January’s mild conditions. Fewer boats means more of the bay to yourself.

Cat Ba National Park
Cat Ba National Park covers roughly half the island and protects one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in northern Vietnam — forested limestone peaks, freshwater lakes, mangroves, and the last population of the critically endangered Cat Ba white-headed langur. January’s cool, dry conditions are excellent for hiking: the main peak trail (Ngu Lam Peak) offers panoramic views over the island and the bay, and the Trung Trang Cave inside the park is a rewarding stop. The trails are quiet in January. Entry: 85,000 VND; guide recommended for the longer routes.

Cat Ba Island & Hospital Cave
Hospital Cave (Hang Quan Y) is a three-storey underground complex built during the Vietnam War to serve as a secret military hospital and command centre — treating up to 150 patients at a time while concealed from aerial observation. The cave operated from 1963 to 1975 and the chambers, operating rooms, and dormitories are still largely intact. January’s low visitor numbers mean a genuinely uncrowded tour of the cave’s three levels. The cave entrance is 4 km from Cat Ba town; the climb requires 100+ steps. Entry: 40,000 VND.

Also Worth Doing
- Monkey Island: A short boat ride from Cat Ba town, this small island has white sand beaches, wild macaques, and a rock-climb viewpoint with panoramic bay views — the January quiet makes it particularly good
- Viet Hai Village: A remote fishing village accessible by bicycle or boat through the national park — cycling through the forested valley in January’s cool air is one of Cat Ba’s most peaceful experiences
- Cat Co Beaches: Cat Co 1, 2, and 3 are connected by a coastal walkway; January’s calm sea makes them pleasant for a walk even if the water is too cool for swimming
Practical Tips for January
- Warm layer: Essential for evenings and for time on the water — the bay breeze is cold in January at cruising speed
- Tour operators: Most Lan Ha Bay cruise operators run year-round; January boats are small and personal. Book through your guesthouse or a Cat Ba town agent
- Getting there: Speedboat or car ferry from Hai Phong (1–1.5 hours); or via Ha Long City; most Hanoi tour operators include transport in their Cat Ba packages
