May marks the beginning of Cat Ba’s summer season — warm, increasingly humid, and with the bay tourism picking up quickly. Rain arrives mainly as afternoon showers rather than sustained downpours, and the long 13-hour days give plenty of time to pack in beach, bay, and hiking activities. The island is busy but not yet at peak summer capacity. For travellers who want warm swimming conditions and full boat tour availability without the July–August peak-season crowds, May is a strong choice.

Best Things to Do in Cat Ba in May
Lan Ha Bay
May’s warm water and long days make Lan Ha Bay day trips and overnight junk cruises excellent. Swimming at the hidden beaches inside the karst lagoons is at its most comfortable in May’s 26°C water; kayaking routes through the limestone corridors are equally good. The bay is busier than in the cool months but well short of the July–August peak — a good time to book an overnight tour for the combination of space and good conditions. Check sea conditions for the day before boarding; May can occasionally have choppy afternoons.

Cat Ba National Park
Hike early in May — the Ngu Lam Peak trail is best before 9 AM when the forest provides shade and the summit air is still cool. May’s increasing humidity makes midday hiking uncomfortable; an early start reaches the peak by 7:30–8 AM with the day’s best views before any cloud builds. The park’s wildlife is very active in May: the white-headed langur is most often spotted in the early morning, and the bird activity at dawn in the limestone forest is among the park’s great underappreciated experiences. Entry: 85,000 VND.

Cat Ba Island: Beaches
May’s warm sea makes the Cat Co beaches the island’s social centre — Cat Co 1 (the most accessible), Cat Co 2 (quieter, connected by walkway), and Cat Co 3 (further south, with a viewpoint) are all swimmable and pleasant. Lounge chairs and umbrellas are available for hire; the beachside food stalls serving grilled seafood and cold drinks are open. May afternoons can bring a short shower — the Cat Co beach bars are a good shelter. Evening beach walks in May’s warm air are one of the island’s pleasures.

Also Worth Doing
- Rock climbing: May is still a good month for the limestone cliff routes above Cat Ba town — go in the morning before the afternoon heat and humidity peak
- Monkey Island: The short boat trip is easy in May’s calm morning sea; the macaques are active and the beach is warm for swimming
- Viet Hai Village cycling: Go early — the 18 km forest road in May’s heat is manageable before 9 AM but hard work in the afternoon
Practical Tips for May
- Morning schedule: Hiking and cycling before 9 AM; beach and bay activities are comfortable all day; evening strolls are pleasant in May’s warm air
- Rain showers: Typically short and warm; carry a light poncho but don’t cancel outdoor plans for a forecast shower
- Junk tours: Book 2–3 days in advance in May as the better boats fill up quickly
