April is Cat Ba’s sweet spot — warm enough for beach swimming and bay kayaking, not yet hot enough to make the hiking trails uncomfortable, and still well ahead of the summer crowds. The island comes alive in April: guesthouses fill with spring visitors, the bay tours run to full capacity, and the Cat Co beaches are warm enough for genuine swimming. The Reunification Day holiday at the end of the month brings an uptick in domestic visitors — book ahead if your dates overlap.

Best Things to Do in Cat Ba in April
Lan Ha Bay
April is one of Lan Ha Bay’s prime months — warm enough for swimming at the floating fishing villages and hidden beaches, calm enough for comfortable kayaking through the karst corridors, and clear enough for excellent photography of the limestone landscape. A two-day, one-night junk tour departing from Cat Ba town covers the bay’s highlights: Bright Cave, the floating village of Cua Van, hidden lagoons inside hollow karsts, and the quieter eastern sections of the bay away from the main Ha Long traffic. The sunset on the second evening from the boat deck is one of northern Vietnam’s finest views.

Cat Ba National Park
April’s temperatures are warm but manageable for hiking — the Ngu Lam Peak trail is comfortable in the morning hours, and the forest canopy provides shade on the steeper sections. The park’s biodiversity is at a spring peak: birds are active, the langurs are visible, and the wildflowers on the limestone outcrops are in bloom. The Trung Trang Cave at the park entrance is a good 45-minute stop before or after the hiking trail. Entry: 85,000 VND.

Cat Ba Island: Beaches & Hospital Cave
April is the first month when the Cat Co beaches are genuinely warm for swimming — Cat Co 1’s shallow, sheltered bay heats up quickly in the spring sun, and the connected Cat Co 2 and 3 beaches via the coastal walkway add variety. After a beach morning, Hospital Cave’s three-storey underground wartime complex makes a compelling historical counterpoint — the carved-out chambers and the concealed ventilation shafts that kept 150 patients alive underground throughout the war are genuinely impressive. Entry to cave: 40,000 VND.

Also Worth Doing
- Monkey Island: April’s warm water makes the beach at Monkey Island genuinely inviting; the rock climb to the viewpoint and the wild macaque encounters add to a good half-day from Cat Ba town
- Viet Hai Village: The 18 km bicycle route through the national park to the remote fishing village is at its best in April’s warm but not hot conditions
- Rock climbing: April’s dry conditions make Cat Ba’s limestone cliffs excellent for outdoor climbing — several operators in Cat Ba town offer guided routes for all levels
