Trang An Grottoes

Trang An in April is at its most visually spectacular — the limestone faces are fully vegetated with lush green, the waterways reflect the karst peaks at their most vivid, and the cave tunnel interiors are cool and rewarding. The 2.5-hour rowing boat circuit passes through nine tunnels and across the four main basins; April’s long days mean a morning boat and an afternoon summit climb at Mua Cave can both be done comfortably in a single day. Book the morning departure — the light on the limestone faces between 8–10 AM is exceptional in April.

Mua Cave Viewpoint

April’s Mua Cave summit view is the most popular version of the panorama — the Tam Coc valley below is a patchwork of vivid green rice paddies, the limestone peaks are fully lush, and the long April days give the summit light all morning. The 500-step climb in April’s warm (but not hot) morning air is comfortable; the summit’s dragon sculpture and twin pagodas are a natural resting point with a view that justifies the climb entirely. Arrive before 8:30 AM to beat the mid-morning groups that arrive as part of organised day tours from Hanoi.

Tam Coc

Tam Coc’s rowing boat through the three cave tunnels in the spring-green valley is one of northern Vietnam’s most photographed experiences in April. The boats — each rowed by a local, often using their feet on the oars — navigate the narrow waterway between the limestone peaks, disappearing into the dark cool of each cave tunnel before emerging into the valley light. April’s long rice stalks frame the waterway; the valley is at its most lush and the light on the karst faces is excellent in the morning hours. Book the 7 AM first departure to beat the midday sun and crowds.
