Overview

Quy Nhon sits on Vietnam's south-central coast in Binh Dinh province, midway between Nha Trang and Da Nang. The city stretches along a 70-kilometre arc of coastline dotted with half-a-dozen uncrowded beaches — Ky Co, Bai Dai, Queen's Beach, Quy Hoa — each separated by rocky headlands and sheltered coves. Away from the shore, the surrounding hills hold some of the best-preserved Cham archaeological sites in the country: the twin Thap Doi towers and Banh It temple complex date back over a thousand years and remain largely visitor-free. Quy Nhon is also the birthplace of Tay Son-era national hero Nguyen Hue and retains a proud local identity that hasn't yet been smoothed over by mass tourism. Most visitors spend two to four days here — long enough to hit the key beaches, rent a motorbike to Ghenh Rang cliff walk, and eat their body weight in fresh seafood.

Administrative note: From July 2025, Quy Nhon is part of the new Gia Lai province, formed by merging the former Bình Định (coastal) and Gia Lai (Central Highlands) provinces. Quy Nhon remains the main coastal city and beach gateway; the Cham towers and beaches are unchanged.

Things to see and do in Quy Nhon

The headline draw is the coastline. Ky Co Beach is Quy Nhon's postcard shot — a curved bay of turquoise water reached by a 30-minute boat ride or a bumpy road through the hills; weekdays it's almost empty. Eo Gio (Wind Strait) is a jagged, narrow sea inlet carved through black basalt cliffs 25 km north of the city — the dramatic landscape and near-constant breeze make it one of the most photogenic spots in central Vietnam. Queen's Beach (Bai Tam Hoang Hau) is the city's most accessible swim beach, calm and clean with views back to the mountain. In the city itself, the Thap Doi Cham Towers (12th century) rise above a leafy park — free to enter and much less visited than My Son. Head 10 km north to find the more elaborate Banh It Temple Complex perched on a hilltop with 360-degree views. For a half-day out, Hon Kho Island offers snorkelling in crystal water reachable by boat from Nhon Hai commune.

Transport options to reach Quy Nhon

Quy Nhon is served by Phu Cat Airport (UIH), 30 km north of the city. Vietnam Airlines, VietJet, and Bamboo Airways fly direct from Hanoi (~1 h 20 min) and Ho Chi Minh City (~1 h). Taxis from the airport to the city centre cost 250,000–350,000 VND; airport shuttle buses are cheaper at around 60,000 VND. By train, Dieu Tri Station is 10 km west of Quy Nhon on the main Hanoi–HCMC line — a short taxi or xe om ride into town. Sleeper trains from Da Nang take ~3.5 hours; from Ho Chi Minh City ~10 hours. Buses from Hanoi, Da Nang, and HCMC drop off at the Quy Nhon inter-provincial bus station on Tay Son Street. From Da Nang the journey is ~3.5–4 hours; from HCMC ~9–10 hours by sleeper bus. For private transfers or a pickup from Da Nang or HCMC, our recommended drivers can arrange door-to-door service.

Adventures and activities in Quy Nhon

Quy Nhon is one of the best cities in Vietnam for eating seafood at local prices. The night market along Nguyen Tat Thanh waterfront runs every evening — order Banh Xeo Tom Nhay (sizzling pancake with jumping shrimp), grilled squid, and fresh clams cooked to order. Bun Cha Ca (fish cake noodle soup) is Binh Dinh's signature breakfast dish and costs under at any street stall. Renting a motorbike (~120,000 VND/day) and riding the coastal road south toward Ghenh Rang and Quy Hoa Beach is the classic half-day loop. Sunrise at the Ghenh Rang cliff walk (where poet Han Mac Tu is buried) is particularly striking. Most beach resorts and guesthouses can arrange boat trips to Ky Co and Hon Kho from around –15 per person. Quad bikes on Bai Dai beach and kayaking at Ky Co are available in peak season (March–August).
