Pu Luong

Pu Luong is a protected nature reserve in Thanh Hoa province, about 150 km southwest of Hanoi — a 3.5-hour drive. Covering over 17,000 hectares of mountain terrain, it offers some of the most spectacular terraced rice fields in northern Vietnam alongside traditional Thai and White Thai minority villages, waterfalls, and jungle trekking. Far less visited than Sapa, Pu Luong rewards travellers who want the rice terrace experience without the crowds.

Overview

Pu Luong sits 150 km southwest of Hanoi in Thanh Hoa province, 65 km south of Mai Chau and 125 km northwest of Ninh Binh. The reserve covers 17,000+ hectares of pristine highland terrain farmed by Thai and White Thai ethnic communities for centuries. The valley follows two rice seasons (March–October), with the most photogenic windows in late May/early June when the fields turn green, and late September/early October at harvest when they go golden yellow. Outside peak season the area is cool and quiet — winter temperatures drop to 7–8°C with morning fog; summer peaks at around 37°C.

Things to see and do in Pu Luong

Don Village is the central hub — the largest terraced fields and the most accessible Thai community. Kho Muong Village sits in an isolated valley settled by White Thai people; nearby Bat Cave is worth exploring. Hieu Village has over 100 traditional stilt houses and Hieu Waterfall, a serene swimming spot reached via a challenging trail. Son Ba Muoi Village at 1,180 m is the highest settlement with the best-preserved traditional architecture. Pu Luong Peak (1,700 m) offers panoramic views across the reserve. Pho Doan Market, open Thursdays and Sundays, is an authentic ethnic minority market worth timing your visit around.
