Pu Luong in September: Golden Rice Terraces Begin & Harvest Season Starts

Updated October 2026, after our own stay in September 2026.

Yes, September is a great month for Pu Luong. The rains are easing, the days are warm rather than hot, and the rice terraces start turning from green to gold ahead of the harvest. We went midweek in September 2026, rode in by motorbike, and spent our mornings on a balcony looking over the rice fields. This guide covers what the weather and the rice were really like, what to do, how to get there from Hanoi and where we stayed.

Comparing months? Our Pu Luong weather by month guide shows temperatures, rain and what the rice looks like for the whole year.

Our honest take: Pu Luong in September, in short

  • September is one of the two best months for the rice. Early in the month the fields are still mostly green; for fully gold terraces, aim for the last week of September or the first days of October.
  • Go on weekdays. We had quiet roads and silent mornings. Weekends and the 2 September National Day holiday bring Hanoi crowds.
  • Stay two nights, not one. The drive from Hanoi takes 4 to 5 hours, and one night leaves you almost no time in the valley.
  • Book a room with a view of the rice fields. The view is the whole point.
  • We were lucky with the weather: cloudy and dry the whole stay. It’s still the tail of the rainy season, so pack a rain jacket.

  • Temperature: 20–28°C (68–82°F)
  • Conditions: Rain decreasing; golden terraces beginning; crisp autumn air

That matched what we found. It was cloudy every day of our stay, which kept the motorbike ride over the mountain roads cool, and we had no rain at all. Mornings in the valley felt fresh, and by midday it was warm enough for the pool.

September is still the end of the rainy season in northern Vietnam, so a dry week isn’t guaranteed. Bring a light rain jacket and shoes with grip, because trails between the terraces get slippery after rain.

What the rice fields look like in September

September and early October bring the main autumn harvest in Pu Luong, and this is when the terraces are at their most photographed. When we visited, the fields were still mostly green with gold starting at the tips, which is lovely in its own way: you get the bright green and the first yellow together. The terraces usually turn fully gold toward the end of the month, and harvest follows in early October.

Our honest take: if gold terraces are your main reason to go, book for the last week of September. If you’d rather have green-and-gold fields and fewer people, the middle of the month works well.

Best things to do in Pu Luong in September

1. Rice terrace walks and harvest photography

This is THE thing to do in September. Walk the paths between the terraces early in the morning, before the clouds lift, when the valley is quiet and the light is soft. Ask your hotel or homestay which village paths are open; some go through fields that are about to be cut.

2. Village trekking

Thai and Muong villages sit along the valleys, and in September you’ll see families getting ready for harvest. Kho Muong village is a good start for a half-day walk.

3. Waterfall hikes on clear days

The rain earlier in the year means the falls still have plenty of water in September. Hieu Waterfall is the easiest to reach and has pools to cool off in after the walk.

4. Bamboo water wheels and river rafting

The bamboo water wheels at Lang Tom still turn along the river, and bamboo rafting on the Cham River is a slow, easy way to see the valley from the water.

5. Ride the Pu Luong loop

We came in by motorbike, and the mountain roads were one of the highlights. If you ride, the Pu Luong loop takes you past the best viewpoints. Ride slowly: the roads are narrow, and buffalo and farm trucks use them too.

How to get to Pu Luong from Hanoi

Pu Luong is about 145 km southwest of Hanoi in Thanh Hoa province, roughly 4 to 5 hours by road. Limousine vans leave from Hanoi’s Old Quarter in the morning and early afternoon, and fares were around 400,000 VND (about $16) one way in October 2026. Most hotels and homestays will arrange pickup from the drop-off in Ba Thuoc.

We rode in by motorbike. It’s a beautiful ride, but only do it if you’re comfortable on mountain roads. See our guide to riding a motorbike in Vietnam first.

Where we stayed: Halora Pu Luong

We stayed at Halora Pu Luong in a deluxe double room with a balcony facing the mountains, and paid about 1,820,000 VND (around $70) a night in 2026. Waking up to the rice fields with no engine noise, just birds and the smell of the fields, was the best part of the trip. The staff gave us a welcome drink and a herbal foot soak after the ride, both included in our combo package.

The pool overlooks the rice fields, and a swim first thing in the morning, before anyone else was up, became our favorite part of the day. At night it’s lit up and just as nice to sit beside.

Our honest take: One real downside. They were still finishing construction next to the restaurant during our stay, so breakfast came with drilling and hammering. Ask when you book whether the work is done. Read our full Halora review in the Vietnam hotel guide.

Good to know before you go

  • Book ahead for late September: harvest is the busiest time of year in the valley, and rooms with a rice field view go first.
  • Pack: a light rain jacket, shoes with grip for muddy paths, insect repellent and a light layer for the mornings.
  • Go midweek: we had quiet villages and silent mornings. Weekends are busier.
  • Combine it: Pu Luong works well with Ninh Binh in September, which also has its rice harvest this month.

Pu Luong in September: FAQ

Is September a good time to visit Pu Luong?

Yes. It’s one of the best months, with warm days, easing rain and rice terraces turning gold. We visited in September 2026 and had dry, cloudy weather.

When are the rice terraces gold in Pu Luong?

Usually from the last week of September into early October, just before harvest. Earlier in September the fields are mostly green with the first gold showing.

Does it rain in Pu Luong in September?

Sometimes. September is the end of the rainy season, so expect the odd shower. We had none during our stay, but bring a rain jacket.

How many days do I need in Pu Luong?

Two nights is the minimum. The trip from Hanoi takes 4 to 5 hours each way, so one night leaves little time for walking the terraces.

Where should I stay in Pu Luong in September?

Pick somewhere with a rice field view. We stayed at Halora Pu Luong for about $70 a night and loved the balcony and pool. See our hotel guide for details.
