Mui Ne

Red and white sand dunes, kite-surfing, and laid-back beach vibe

Overview

Mui Ne is a 20-kilometre beach strip on Vietnam's south-central coast, about 200 km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City in Binh Thuan province. It sits in a coastal micro-desert — the driest pocket in the country — which is why the landscape here looks unlike anywhere else in Vietnam: red and white sand dunes rolling down toward the sea, terracotta-coloured fishing villages, and casuarina-lined beaches that catch a near-constant offshore wind. That wind is what made Mui Ne famous among kitesurfers and windsurfers; it's one of the best kiteboarding destinations in Southeast Asia, with reliable conditions from November through April. Beyond the watersports crowd, Mui Ne draws visitors for its easy-going resort vibe, excellent fresh seafood, and the trio of photogenic day trips — the white sand dunes at dawn, the red dunes at sunset, and the Fairy Stream walk. It's far less developed than Nha Trang and attractively uncrowded outside of Vietnamese public holidays.

Things to see and do in Mui Ne

The White Sand Dunes (Bau Trang) are 25 km north of town and best visited at sunrise — a vast pale desert landscape with a freshwater lake at the base, reached by jeep or motorbike before dawn. Closer to town, the Red Sand Dunes glow orange-red at sunset and are popular for sandboarding (plastic sleds rented for 10,000–20,000 VND); a favourite spot for the golden-hour crowd. The Fairy Stream (Suoi Tien) is a shallow ankle-deep creek that winds through red clay formations and miniature canyons for about 1.5 km — go barefoot, take a coconut from a stall at the entrance, and walk to the waterfall at the end; allow 45 minutes each way. The old Mui Ne Fishing Village at the northeastern end of the bay is most atmospheric at 5–7 AM when the fleet returns and the catch is unloaded and auctioned at the dock — a colourful, chaotic scene worth setting the alarm for. Po Shanu Cham Towers on a hillside at the western end of Phan Thiet city offer views over the coast and a glimpse of the Cham heritage that predates the Vietnamese settlement of this region.

Transport options to reach Mui Ne

Mui Ne is 200 km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City — about 4–5 hours by road. Sleeper buses are the most popular option: Phuong Trang (FUTA), Hanh Cafe, and Sinh Tourist run multiple daily departures from HCMC's Mien Dong bus station; tickets cost 150,000–220,000 VND and drop you on the main beach road. Open-tour buses from Da Lat to Mui Ne take around 3–4 hours (120,000–180,000 VND) and are a convenient link if you're doing the southern circuit. From Da Lat, shared minivans also cover the route in about 3 hours. The nearest train station is Muong Man (in Phan Thiet city, 25 km west of Mui Ne) on the main Hanoi–HCMC line — a taxi or grab from the station to Mui Ne costs about 200,000–250,000 VND. There is no commercial airport in Phan Thiet yet, though one is under construction. For private transfers from HCMC or Da Lat, our recommended drivers can arrange door-to-door pickups.
