Lan Ha Bay

Lan Ha Bay is the southern extension of the Ha Long Bay limestone karst system — 300-plus islands and islets of dramatic limestone separated by emerald water, largely without the cruise ship traffic of its more famous neighbour to the north. Where Ha Long Bay has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994 and receives millions of visitors annually, Lan Ha Bay remains the quieter, less commercialised alternative: the same extraordinary karst geology, the same jewel-coloured water, but explored by smaller boats from Cat Ba Island rather than the Ha Long City cruise terminal.

Lan Ha Bay is accessible only from Cat Ba Island — there are no direct boat tours from Ha Long City or Hanoi; you must reach Cat Ba first. This single logistical step filters out the day-trip crowd and means that Lan Ha Bay’s beaches, caves, and floating villages are typically visited by travellers who have invested at least a night on Cat Ba. The result is a bay that feels genuinely less crowded even at peak season.

Kayaking

Kayaking is the best way to experience Lan Ha Bay — the low profile of a kayak allows access through narrow cave passages and into hidden lagoons that larger boats cannot enter. The limestone islands have numerous sea caves with lagoon interiors (accessible only at low tide by kayak), and the experience of paddling through a cave into a hidden lagoon is one of the most distinctive things Lan Ha Bay offers. Most Cat Ba boat tours include kayak hire; independent kayak hire is available from Cat Ba Town’s waterfront operators for full-day self-guided trips.

Boat Tours from Cat Ba

One-day and two-day boat tours of Lan Ha Bay depart from Cat Ba Town harbour. The typical one-day tour covers the main bay islands, a swimming stop at a beach, a cave visit, kayaking, and lunch on board; the two-day version adds a night anchored in the bay and a second day of more remote island exploration. The tours range from budget wooden day boats (50–80 USD per person including lunch) to premium overnight cruise vessels (120–200 USD per person for two days). Book directly in Cat Ba Town for the best prices; the Hanoi tour agencies add a significant markup for the same boats.

Ba Trai Dao Beach

Ba Trai Dao (Three Peach Beach) is the most celebrated beach in Lan Ha Bay — a white sand arc between three limestone karst outcrops, accessible only by boat, with no permanent structures and swimming in clear water directly off the beach. Most Lan Ha Bay boat tours include a stop here; it’s best in the morning before the midday boats arrive. The beach is completely deserted in the early morning when the overnight cruise boats anchor nearby and passengers swim before breakfast.

Getting There

Lan Ha Bay is accessed only from Cat Ba Island. Reach Cat Ba by bus+ferry from Hanoi (3.5–4 hours), speedboat from Ha Long City (30–40 minutes), or ferry from Hai Phong. Once on Cat Ba, all Lan Ha Bay boat tours depart from the main Cat Ba Town harbour waterfront.
