Overview
Cat Ba National Park covers two-thirds of Cat Ba Island and is one of the most biodiverse protected areas in northern Vietnam. Dense tropical forest, limestone peaks, mangrove swamps, and coral reefs shelter over 1,500 species — including the critically endangered Cat Ba langur, one of the world’s rarest primates with fewer than 100 individuals remaining.

What to See and Do
- Ngu Lam Peak hike — the most popular trail; 2–3 hours return through jungle to a limestone summit with views over the bay
- Viet Hai Village trek — 4–5 hour jungle walk to a remote traditional village; return by boat
- Cat Ba langur spotting — guided tours with park rangers; Tung Thu Peninsula is the best area
- Hospital Cave — wartime underground hospital carved into the limestone; 3 storeys, used by the Viet Cong (45,000 VND)
- Bird watching — over 160 species including hornbills and kingfishers
Practical Information
- Entrance fee: 160,000 VND per person
- Location: Cat Ba Island, Hai Phong Province; accessible by ferry from Ha Long City or Hai Phong
- Best season: Oct–Apr (dry season); hiking trails can be muddy and slippery Jun–Sep
- Opening hours: 7 AM – 6 PM daily
- Guides: Recommended for Viet Hai trek and langur spotting; available at park entrance
Tips
- Start hikes early — jungle heat and humidity are intense by 10 AM in summer months
- Hire a park guide for langur spotting — sightings are not guaranteed without local knowledge
- Combine the park with Lan Ha Bay for a full Cat Ba Island day
- Wear long sleeves and insect repellent on jungle trails
