Ha Long Bay Itinerary Ideas

📅 2 days 🚶 Standard pace

Ha Long Bay is one of the world’s most iconic seascapes — nearly 2,000 limestone karst islands rising from green-blue water, many pierced by grottoes and hidden beaches. The best way to experience it is by overnight cruise; a day trip barely scratches the surface.

1 Day — Day Trip from Hanoi

A long day but possible: bus at 7am from Hanoi (3.5 hrs), join a boat for 4–5 hours on the water (cave, kayak, swim), back to Hanoi by 9pm. You’ll see the scenery but miss the bay at dawn and dusk when the light is extraordinary. Only worthwhile if an overnight isn’t possible.

2 Days — Classic Overnight Cruise (Recommended)

  • Day 1 (board midday): Sail into the bay → visit a cave (Sung Sot / Thien Cung) → kayak through hidden lagoons → sunset on deck with drinks → dinner on board → sleep on the bay
  • Day 2 (disembark lunchtime): Tai Chi on deck at sunrise → visit a floating fishing village → cook a traditional dish on board → disembark and return to Hanoi

3 Days — Lan Ha Bay Extension

  • Day 1: Board, sail Ha Long’s central zone, cave, sunset
  • Day 2: Sail further into Lan Ha Bay (quieter, fewer tour boats) → kayak to hidden beaches → anchor overnight near Cat Ba Island
  • Day 3: Explore Cat Ba Island by bicycle or motorbike → Cat Ba National Park short hike → return to Halong City

4–5 Days: Cat Ba Island Base

Stay on Cat Ba Island rather than a cruise and explore independently:

  • Kayak or hire a day boat into Lan Ha Bay — the quieter, equally beautiful southern section
  • Hike Cat Ba National Park (full day; guide recommended)
  • Motorbike Cat Ba’s coastline and fishing villages
  • Hospital Cave — wartime underground hospital inside the island

Activities to Build Into Any Cruise

  • Kayaking through sea caves and into hidden lagoons at low tide
  • Swimming off the boat deck (water warm year-round)
  • Squid fishing off the stern at night — boats provide gear
  • Sunrise on deck before other boats are moving — worth setting an early alarm

Practical Notes

  • Cruise tiers: Budget (dorm cabin, basic food): $40–60/night; Mid-range: $80–150/night; Luxury: $200+/night. Mid-range is the sweet spot
  • Booking: Book at least a week ahead in high season (June–August, October–November). Most Hanoi hotels and hostels book reliably
  • Best season: September–November (calm water, good visibility, warm but not sweltering). Avoid January–February (cold, foggy)
  • Skip Halong City itself — there’s nothing to see there; head straight to the port
