May is water-pouring season in Mu Cang Chai. Water is channelled down the hillsides into the terraces, and the flooded fields reflect the sky like stacked mirrors. H’mong farmers plough with buffalo and plant the seedlings by hand. The rainy season also starts this month, mostly as heavy showers in the afternoon or at night.
