Overview
Mai Chau is a wide, flat valley in Hoa Binh province, 135 km southwest of Hanoi — close enough for a weekend trip yet far enough to feel like a different world. The valley floor is a patchwork of rice paddies tended by White Thai and Muong ethnic communities who have farmed here for centuries, and the stilted wooden houses of villages like Lac, Pom Coong, and Na Phon sit at the edges of the fields in almost picture-perfect arrangement. What makes Mai Chau work as a destination is its combination of accessibility and authenticity: you can be here in under 4 hours from Hanoi, stay in a family homestay on stilts, eat home-cooked Thai food, watch traditional dance performances, and cycle through the valley at dawn before the tour buses arrive. Further from the main valley, villages like Hang Kia and Pa Co in the surrounding hills are home to Hmong communities and see very few visitors — worth the extra drive. The best time to visit is late September to early October when the rice turns gold at harvest, or May–June when the newly planted paddies mirror the sky.

Things to see and do in Mai Chau
The cultural core of the valley is the trio of White Thai villages — Lac, Pom Coong, and Na Phon — reachable on foot or by bicycle from each other in 1.5–2 hours. Lac is the most visited and most geared toward tourists, with weaving workshops selling brocade textiles and several homestay guesthouses; Pom Coong and Na Phon are quieter and more residential. Thung Khe Pass (White Stone Pass), about 20 km from the valley on the road from Hanoi, sits at around 1,000 m with sweeping views down into the valley — roadside stalls sell grilled corn, bamboo rice, and local fruit. For something more remote, Mai Hich Village (14 km from town) sits in a sub-valley of its own, surrounded by rice fields and streams, with a handful of eco-lodges and almost no day-trippers. The Hmong villages of Hang Kia and Pa Co (40 km away in the hills) are spectacular during spring when plum and peach trees blossom, and host a traditional Sunday market with batik dyeing and silver jewellery stalls.

Getting There
Transport options to reach Mai Chau
Mai Chau is 135 km from Hanoi — about 3.5–4 hours by car via Highway 6 through Hoa Binh. Shuttle vans are the most practical option: several operators (Duc Phong, Queen Cafe, various Hanoi travel agencies) run morning departures from the Old Quarter for around –12/person, dropping off at the valley entrance or directly at homestays. The journey takes about 4 hours. Local buses from Hanoi's My Dinh bus station go to Tong Dau junction via Hoa Binh for around 80,000–100,000 VND, then a xe om or taxi for the last stretch into the valley; total journey 5–6 hours. Motorbike from Hanoi is a popular choice for independent travellers — Highway 6 is well-paved and the Thung Khe Pass section is one of the most scenic mountain roads in the north; allow 4–5 hours. There is no train or airport serving Mai Chau. For private transfers from Hanoi, our recommended drivers can arrange door-to-door pickups and often combine Mai Chau with Ninh Binh or Pu Luong into a multi-day loop.

Trekking ranges from gentle 2–3 hour walks between villages to full-day or overnight treks into the hills to Xam Khoe or Buoc villages with a local guide. For food, meals at homestays are the highlight: Com Lam (rice grilled inside bamboo tubes) is the local staple, alongside free-range hill chicken, sour bamboo shoot dishes, Muong pork, and fresh river fish. Cooking classes with homestay hosts are available at most properties. Seasonal farming activities — rice planting, corn harvesting, buffalo herding — can be arranged depending on when you visit.
