Phong Nha

Home to Son Doong – the world's largest cave and stunning karst jungle

Overview

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh province is the caving capital of the world. The park sits on one of the oldest karst mountain ranges in Asia — over 300 million years old — and hides the most extraordinary cave systems ever discovered, including Son Doong, the world's largest cave by volume, and Hang En, the world's third largest. The town of Phong Nha itself is a sleepy riverside village on the Son River, about 50 km north of Dong Hoi. It has transformed in the past decade from an obscure backwater into Vietnam's top adventure destination, yet still feels raw and unhurried compared to Hoi An or Ha Long. Most visitors spend 2–4 days here: enough for a day trip to Paradise Cave, a boat ride through Phong Nha Cave, and a cycle through the Bong Lai Valley. For the serious caving expeditions — Tu Lan, Hang En, Son Doong — you need to plan weeks or months ahead. The dry season runs February to August; caves like Phong Nha Cave close during heavy rain when the river floods.

Things to see and do in Phong Nha

Son Doong Cave is the headline act — a passage large enough to contain a 40-storey skyscraper, with its own weather system, jungle, and river inside. The only tour operator is Oxalis; the 4-day expedition costs around ,000 and books out over a year in advance. More accessible but still spectacular: Paradise Cave (Thien Duong) stretches 31 km and features a cathedral-like main chamber with towering stalactites — the 1-km wooden walkway inside is open year-round and takes about 2 hours. Phong Nha Cave is reached by boat along the Son River, gliding past cliff faces and through the illuminated entrance chamber; best in the dry season. Dark Cave (Hang Toi) is the adventure option — zip-line over the river, swim into the cave, and roll in mud pools inside. Tu Lan Cave System, used as a filming location for Kong: Skull Island, involves wading, swimming, and crawling through connected cave tunnels; one-day to four-day trips available via Oxalis. Hang En is a full-day jungle trek with an overnight inside the cave — one of the most memorable experiences in Vietnam.

Experiences

Adventures and activities in Phong Nha

Beyond the caves, Phong Nha rewards slow exploration. Rent a bicycle or motorbike and ride the Bong Lai Valley loop — 15 km through rice paddies, farmland, and limestone hills, passing friendly locals and small family restaurants. The Pub with Cold Beer is a legendary pit stop: a farm-to-table restaurant reached by boat across the river, run by a local family, serving fresh food and cold drinks in a jungle setting. Momma D's Rooftop has the best sundowner views over the national park. For an evening wind-down, the town's stretch of riverside restaurants does simple Vietnamese food and cold beer. Kayaking tours run along the Son River past the cave entrance cliffs. Night wildlife tours into the national park offer a chance to spot civets, slow lorises, and deer. The Bong Lai Valley cycling loop and a morning boat trip to Phong Nha Cave make for a perfect two-day itinerary at low cost.
