Lim Mong Village
Overview
Lìm Mông is a H'mong village in Cao Phạ commune, on the western slopes of Khau Phạ Pass, about 30 km from Mu Cang Chai town. Its wooden houses sit among terraces that fall away to the Thai village of Lìm Thái on the valley floor, so the village looks straight across the Cao Phạ valley. Families here still farm the terraces, grow and weave hemp and dye cloth with indigo.
Get There
Lìm Mông is off National Road 32 on the Mu Cang Chai side of Khau Phạ Pass. From the main road near Lìm Thái, a steep, winding concrete road with some dirt sections climbs sharply for 3–4 km to the village. Go up by motorbike, by xe ôm (motorbike taxi) from Mu Cang Chai town or Tú Lệ, or on foot. The road is slippery after rain, so less experienced riders should take a xe ôm.
From Hanoi, take a sleeper bus from My Dinh bus station towards Mu Cang Chai (VND 300,000–600,000, 6–8 hours) and ask to be dropped at Lìm Thái after crossing the pass.
Hotels
A few H'mong families in Lìm Mông run homestays, with mattresses in a shared loft and dinner with the family. They are small and fill up at harvest, so book ahead through a guide or your previous night's host. For more choice, stay in Tú Lệ on the other side of the pass (stilt-house homestays and hot springs) or in guesthouses in Mu Cang Chai town.

Best time: May to June, when the flooded terraces reflect the sky, and mid-September to early October, when the rice is golden. In late September the paragliding festival launches from the slopes above the village.
Cloud hunting: On clear, cold mornings, cloud fills the Cao Phạ valley below the village. Go out at first light or in the late afternoon; October and November are the most reliable months.
Things to do: Walk the field paths down to Lìm Thái and back, watch families weaving hemp and dyeing indigo cloth, and help in the fields at planting or harvest if your host invites you. Ask before photographing people or going into houses.
