Cam Thanh Coconut Forest
Overview
Cam Thanh village, 4 km east of Hoi An, sits inside a section of the Bay Mau coconut palm forest — a waterway system of narrow channels between dense nipa palm groves. The main activity is the basket boat ride: round woven bamboo coracles (thung chai) poled by local guides through the palm tunnels, with an optional detour for crab fishing using baited traps lowered into the shallows. The boats are genuinely difficult to steer and guides often spin them deliberately — it is part of the experience.
The coconut forest covers about 100 hectares and has been used for fishing and foraging for generations. Tours last 45 minutes to an hour on the water. Most operators combine the boat ride with a short walk through the village and a stop at a local house for coconut rice or green rice cake. Morning visits avoid the worst of the midday heat; the light through the palm canopy is better before 10am.
Get There
Cam Thanh is 4 km southeast of Hoi An town centre — about 15 minutes by bicycle along the riverside road, or 10 minutes by motorbike or taxi. Most visitors join a half-day tour from Hoi An that includes transport. Independent visitors can reach the main boat launch area via Nguyen Phuc Chu Street heading east from the Ancient Town.
