Da Lat Itinerary Ideas

📅 2 days 🚶 Standard pace

Da Lat sits at 1,500 m in the Central Highlands — a French colonial hill station with cool air, pine forests, flower farms, and a landscape of lakes and waterfalls that feels entirely different from lowland Vietnam. It’s beloved by Vietnamese honeymooners and weekend trippers from Ho Chi Minh City, with an excellent café culture and some of Vietnam’s best produce.

1 Day in Da Lat

  • Morning: Xuan Huong Lake walk (the central lake; 7 km circumference; stroll or hire a paddleboat); Lam Vien Square market
  • Midday: Bao Dai Summer Palace (the last emperor’s highland retreat; original 1930s furnishings; 1 hr)
  • Afternoon: Datanla Waterfall (bobsled ride down to the waterfall through the pines; 30 min from town)
  • Evening: Da Lat Night Market for strawberry wine, avocado ice cream, and grilled corn; dinner of bánh mì xíu mại (Vietnamese meatball sandwich, a Da Lat specialty)

2 Days in Da Lat

  • Day 1: Town and colonial heritage — Lam Dong Museum, Bao Dai Palace, Crazy House (Hang Nga; an organic architectural fever dream), Xuan Huong Lake
  • Day 2: Countryside circuit by motorbike — Elephant Falls (25 km southwest; the most impressive waterfall in the region), Lang Bian Mountain climb (2,167 m; 4 hrs return on foot from the base village), flower farms and strawberry picking

3 Days in Da Lat

  • Day 1: City sightseeing and coffee culture (Da Lat is a major coffee-growing region; excellent cafés)
  • Day 2: Canyoning tour — rappelling down waterfalls and swimming through jungle gorges (several operators; highly recommended; full-day)
  • Day 3: Lang Bian sunrise hike + afternoon flower farm + evening at the night market

4–5 Days: Da Lat and the Highlands

  • Mountain biking through pine forests and flower farms (1–2 day guided routes)
  • Bidoup Nui Ba National Park — cloud forest, endemic birds, trekking (60 km north)
  • Day trip to Dalat wine farm (Vang Dalat; tour includes tasting the local grape wine)
  • Motorbike south to Phan Rang (100 km) — dramatic desert-like landscape, Cham towers, wine grape vineyards

Activities to Build Into Any Itinerary

  • Coffee farm visit and cupping — Da Lat arabica is among Vietnam’s finest; several farms offer tours near the city
  • Artichoke tea tasting — the local specialty; grown on hillside farms around the lake
  • Evening around the night market — the cold air makes the open-air street food experience unique in Vietnam
  • Sunrise at Lang Bian peak — above the clouds at dawn, looking over the plateau

Practical Notes

  • Getting there: Lien Khuong Airport (30 km south; flights from Hanoi and HCMC); overnight bus from HCMC (8 hrs) or Nha Trang (4 hrs)
  • Getting around: Hire a motorbike (100,000–150,000 VND/day) for out-of-town sights; walking works for the town centre and lake
  • Temperature: 15–25°C year-round; bring a light jacket, especially for evenings
  • Best season: November–April (dry, crisp; flower season peaks December–January). The city is beautiful in the light rain of April–May too
