Con Dao Prison

Con Dao Prison — established by the French in 1861 — held political prisoners through the colonial, Republic of Vietnam, and early communist periods. Its most notorious feature is the Tiger Cages: low concrete cells where prisoners were held in groups, unable to stand, exposed to the sun through a barred roof. The prison complex is now a museum; Hang Duong Cemetery nearby holds the graves of revolutionary prisoners including Vo Thi Sau.
