What Is Hanoi Train Street?

Train Street is a narrow railway track that cuts through a residential neighbourhood in central Hanoi. Twice a day — and more on weekends — a full-size train passes within inches of café tables and residential doorways. It became one of the most photographed spots in Vietnam and remains a uniquely Hanoian experience.

Two Locations to Know

Train Street 1 — The Classic Spot (Near Hoan Kiem)

Address: 5 Tran Phu, Hang Bong, Hoan Kiem, Ha Noi
Distance: 15 minutes from Old Quarter; 20 minutes from Hoan Kiem Lake

Train Street 2 — Phung Hung (Less Crowded)

Address: Phung Hung Street, Hoan Kiem, Ha Noi
Character: Longer stretch, more atmospheric murals, far fewer tourists — the recommended option

Tips for Your Visit

Arrive just before a scheduled train time, take a seat at one of the cafés, and order a drink — this is the standard arrangement that keeps the street accessible. Phung Hung is the most relaxed option with the best atmosphere; Street 1 near Hoan Kiem has the most history but also the most crowds.
