Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave)
The largest cave in Ha Long Bay — two cathedral-sized chambers with towering stalactites, 680 steps, and panoramic bay views.
Overview
Sung Sot — “Surprise Cave” in Vietnamese — is the largest and most visited cave in Ha Long Bay, sitting on Bo Hon Island about 14 km from Bai Chay Wharf. Discovered by a French scientist in 1901 and originally called Grotte des Surprises, it features two vast cathedral-like chambers filled with towering stalactites and stalagmites. A 680-step path winds through lush greenery to the cave entrance, which opens to a terrace with panoramic views over the bay. CNN Travel has listed it among Vietnam’s top seven most stunning caves.
