Da Nang Fine Arts Museum

The Da Nang Fine Arts Museum is a quiet, undervisited institution on Le Duan Street with a collection focused on artists from central Vietnam. The building is a restored French colonial villa; the galleries are spread across three floors with works divided by medium — oil, silk, lacquer, and sculpture.

The lacquerwork on the upper floor is the standout. Vietnamese lacquer painting is a slow technique: dozens of layers are applied to a wooden board, each left to cure, then sanded back. The finished surface has a reflective depth that photographs don't capture well. Several of the pieces here show rural and coastal scenes from central Vietnam painted in this medium. The silk paintings are also strong. Budget an hour; the museum is rarely crowded.
