Hue in March: Royal Tombs, Cycling Circuit & Best Dry-Season Conditions

March is the other finest month for Hue — equally dry as February (26% rain chance), warming to a very comfortable 21–27°C, and with the city in full post-Tet spring energy. The royal tomb complexes are at their most accessible; the Perfume River boat tours are excellent in the clear March light; and the Flag Tower above the Citadel moat is most photogenic in the spring morning sun. March is also the last dry-season month before the April warming and the beginning of the summer heat — the ideal window for cycling between the south bank tomb complexes.

Best Things to Do in Hue in March

Tu Duc Mausoleum

The Tu Duc Mausoleum — the most romantically conceived of Hue’s royal tomb complexes — is at its best in March’s mild spring conditions. Emperor Tu Duc (reigned 1847–1883) designed the complex himself as a retreat: a lake with a pavilion for poetry writing, a theatre, gardens, and his tomb — all set in a pine forest 7 km south of the city. The lotus lake (Du Khiem lake) in front of the Xung Khiem Pavilion is at a good water level in March; the pine forest paths are dry and pleasant for a slow exploration of the complex’s 12 structures. March’s clear light gives the pavilion’s reflection in the lotus lake its most photogenic quality of the dry season.

Khai Dinh Mausoleum

The Khai Dinh Mausoleum — the most visually dramatic of Hue’s royal tomb complexes — is excellent in March’s clear light. Built between 1920 and 1931 in a unique fusion of Vietnamese, French, and Chinese architectural styles, the mausoleum climbs a steep hillside in a series of terraced courtyards topped by the Thien Dinh Palace. The interior of the palace is covered entirely in coloured glass and ceramic mosaics — an extraordinary decorative programme that is best seen in the morning light (before noon) when the natural light through the windows illuminates the mosaic ceiling. The 127 steps to the main palace level are steep but the view from the top terrace over the pine-forested hills is the reward.

Flag Tower

The Flag Tower (Ky Dai) on the south side of the Citadel moat — a 37-metre tower flying the Vietnamese flag above the Ngo Mon Gate — is most striking in March’s clear morning light. The tower, built in 1807, is the most visible landmark of the Imperial Citadel complex from the outside; the view of the Ngo Mon Gate across the Citadel moat with the Flag Tower above it is the classic Hue image. March’s clear skies and good light give this view its sharpest, most photogenic quality of the year. The Flag Tower is also the best orientation point for the Citadel before entering — walk the full length of the moat along the south wall for the best perspective on the complex’s scale.
