The Ngo Mon Gate in the early morning summer light has a golden quality that the winter months’ cooler light doesn’t match; the Thai Hoa Palace throne room and the Hien Lam Pavilion are best explored in the morning cool. The Nine Dynastic Urns — bronze urns representing the Nguyen emperors, each decorated with relief scenes of rivers, mountains, and historical events — require close reading; May’s early morning gives the time and comfort for this. Be inside by 7 AM and plan to leave by 10 AM before the heat becomes oppressive.
Thien Mu Pagoda
May’s Thien Mu Pagoda is best reached by dragon boat (30-minute upriver journey in the morning cool) rather than by motorbike in the heat.
