Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba Island is the largest island in Lan Ha Bay — a 285 km² landmass of limestone karst, dense jungle, white-sand beaches, and fishing communities that sits at the southern end of Ha Long Bay’s wider archipelago. Lonely Planet ranked Cat Ba among the ten best beaches in Vietnam in 2023. The island is simultaneously a functioning fishing town, a base for Lan Ha Bay boat tours and kayaking, a national park trekking destination, and a beach resort — packed into an island accessible from Hanoi in under four hours.

Cat Ba Town on the island’s southern shore is the gateway: a working harbour lined with seafood restaurants and guesthouses, with Cat Co Beach (Cat Co 1, 2, and 3) a short walk east along the cliffs. The island’s interior rises quickly into the national park — dense jungle, karst peaks, and rare golden-headed langur habitat. To the south and east, Lan Ha Bay’s 300-plus limestone islands extend to the horizon; the bay is less visited than Ha Long but arguably more beautiful.

Cat Co Beaches

Cat Co 1, 2, and 3 are three connected beach coves on the southeastern tip of Cat Ba Town, each with a slightly different character. Cat Co 1 is the most developed — sunbeds, a beach bar, and the easiest water access — and can be reached by a cliffside boardwalk from Cat Ba Town (15 minutes on foot) or by taxi. Cat Co 2 is quieter, with good swimming and snorkelling off the rocks at the north end. Cat Co 3 is the most secluded, requiring a walk through a small resort. All three beaches have clear water and the limestone cliff backdrop that makes Cat Ba’s beaches distinct from the flat tropical beach resorts of southern Vietnam.

Getting There

• From Hanoi: Bus + ferry combination (around 3.5–4 hours total); several operators run door-to-door minibus + speedboat packages from Hanoi’s Old Quarter
• From Ha Long City: Direct speedboat (30–40 minutes) or ferry
• From Hai Phong: Ferry from Got Pier (Ben Got) — the most local and cheapest option (around 45 minutes)

Best Time to Visit

October to April is peak season — dry, cooler (18–28°C), and the clearest water. May to September is warmer (28–35°C) with higher rain frequency; the beaches are still good in the morning but afternoon thunderstorms are common. The island stays open year-round; even the wet season has its rewards in the lush jungle and emptier beaches.

Practical Tips

• Stay at least two nights: One night is enough for the beaches; two nights adds a Lan Ha Bay boat day and the national park trekking
• Book boat tours from Cat Ba Town: The Lan Ha Bay 1-day and 2-day kayaking tours are cheaper and less crowded than the Ha Long Bay equivalents booked from Hanoi
• Seafood: The restaurants along the Cat Ba Town waterfront serve the island’s fresh catch — crab, squid, clams, and grilled fish are all excellent and priced for the local market rather than the tourist circuit
