Hanoi in April: Spring Peak, Ho Chi Minh Complex & Liberation Day

April brings Hanoi’s warmest spring temperatures (21–30°C) and the start of afternoon showers as the wet season approaches. The Hung Kings Festival and Liberation Day are the month’s public holidays. The Perfume Pagoda pilgrimage season winds down, the Old Quarter has its full spring-to-summer character, and the West Lake lotus beds are beginning their pre-season growth. April is one of the busiest domestic travel months around the public holidays — book accommodation well ahead for the 30 April long weekend.

Best Things to Do in Hanoi in April

Hoan Kiem Lake

April’s Hoan Kiem Lake is at its spring warmth — the water is calm and clear in the early morning before the afternoon showers, the Ngoc Son Temple garden is in full new-leaf growth, and the lake’s promenade morning scene (tai chi, badminton, elderly groups chatting on the benches) has the full energy of a Hanoi spring morning. The weekend pedestrian evenings in April are excellent before the summer heat begins — warm enough for outdoor dining without the June–August humidity. The Liberation Day long weekend (29 April–2 May) brings Vietnamese families to the lake area in numbers; the cultural decorations and the holiday atmosphere give the lake a festive character.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex — on Ba Dinh Square, where Ho Chi Minh read the Vietnamese Declaration of Independence in September 1945 — is most rewarding in April’s mild temperatures. The mausoleum itself (where Ho Chi Minh’s embalmed body lies in state) is open Tuesday–Thursday and Saturday–Sunday mornings; the surrounding complex includes the Presidential Palace, Ho Chi Minh’s stilt house, his personal fish pond, and the One Pillar Pagoda. April’s warm but pre-summer temperatures make walking the extensive grounds comfortable; the queue for the mausoleum (dress code: covered shoulders and knees, no photography inside) is shorter on weekday mornings. Allow 2–3 hours for the full complex.

One Pillar Pagoda

The One Pillar Pagoda (Chua Mot Cot) — a single lotus-shaped pavilion rising from a square pond, built in 1049 by Emperor Ly Thai Tong — is best visited as part of the Ho Chi Minh complex visit in April’s spring air. The pagoda’s symbolic design (the lotus representing purity rising from muddy water) is most resonant when the surrounding trees are in spring leaf. The April light through the surrounding gardens gives the pagoda’s reflection in the pond a clear quality that the summer months’ heat haze diminishes. Combine with the mausoleum complex for an efficient half-morning programme.

Also Worth Doing

  • West Lake sunset: April evenings at Tay Ho (West Lake) are excellent for the lakeside café and restaurant scene — the warmth, the long days, and the lake’s calm water in the evening light make this the best month for a West Lake sunset dinner
  • Vietnam Museum of Ethnology: The outstanding museum covering all 54 of Vietnam’s ethnic groups has its outdoor village reconstructions most accessible in April’s mild weather — the full-scale stilt houses, longhouses, and communal buildings in the outdoor section require dry weather
  • Tran Quoc Pagoda: The oldest pagoda in Hanoi (6th century, rebuilt over centuries) on a small island in West Lake is excellent in April’s spring garden conditions

Practical Tips for April
