Po Nagar Cham Towers

A 7th–12th century Hindu temple complex on a hilltop above the Cai River — one of the finest surviving Cham religious sites in southern Vietnam, still actively used for worship.

Overview

Po Nagar (Tháp Bà Ponagar) is the most significant Cham religious site in southern Vietnam — a complex of four towers on a granite hill above the mouth of the Cai River, built between the 7th and 12th centuries and dedicated to the Cham mother goddess Yang Po Inư Nagar. Unusually for a Vietnamese historical site, the towers are still actively used for worship: Vietnamese Buddhists, ethnic Cham Muslims, and Hindu devotees all come to pray at the altars inside, filling the incense-thick interior with offerings of flowers and fruit. The main tower, at 23 metres, is remarkably well preserved and contains a black stone statue of the goddess.

Entry 30,000 VND (about $1). Open daily 06:00–18:00; from October to December it usually closes a little earlier, around 17:30. Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees). Best visited early morning before tour groups arrive. It's mostly a short outdoor visit, so it works in any month, including the wet season (see October). More in my Nha Trang travel guide.

Get There

Po Nagar is 2 km north of the city centre on the north bank of the Cai River: about 10 minutes by taxi or Grab, or 20 minutes by bicycle along the riverside road.
