Best Things to Do in Nha Trang in October

I’ve put the rain-proof options first. Island trips come last because they’re the least reliable this month.

Po Nagar Cham Towers

The Cham towers sit on a hill above the Cai River, about 10 minutes by Grab from the beach. It’s a short visit, an hour or so, which makes it easy to fit into a dry gap. The trees around the complex are green after the rains, and you’ll share it with very few tourists in October. It’s still an active temple, so cover your shoulders and knees. Entry: 30,000 VND.

Long Son Pagoda

The white Buddha is 152 steps up the hill behind the pagoda. October’s slightly cooler temperatures make the climb easier, but the steps get slippery in rain, so go in a dry spell and wear shoes with grip. The grounds are quiet this month, without the tour groups of January and February. Free entry.

Oceanographic Museum

This is the best rainy-afternoon stop in town. It’s mostly indoors, at Cau Da port at the southern end of the bay, with aquarium tanks, a whale skeleton and a large collection of preserved sea life. Allow an hour or two. Entry: 40,000 VND.

Mud baths and hot springs

Mud baths are a good fit for October. You’re getting wet anyway, and a warm mineral pool is pleasant on a grey day. I-Resort, just north of the city, is the best-known option. Go on a weekday if you can, because weekends bring local groups.

Dam Market

Dam Market is Nha Trang’s main local market, and much of it is under cover. Go in the morning for fresh produce, dried seafood and Vietnamese pantry staples. It’s a useful place to wait out a downpour.

Nha Trang Night Market

The night market is quieter in October and mostly local. Seafood stalls are well stocked with lobster, crab and prawns. Evening showers can shut stalls early, so eat first and browse after.

Hon Mun Island

Hon Mun has the best snorkelling in the bay, but October is a poor month for it. Boats are often cancelled when the sea is rough, and visibility drops after heavy rain. If you want to try, book a refundable tour, check the forecast the evening before, and don’t build your trip around it.

• Island tours: book same-day or for the next day only, and never non-refundable.
• Rain gear: bring a light rain jacket and sandals that can get wet. Grab is the easiest way around during a downpour.
