Saigon Opera House (Municipal Theatre)
Overview
The Saigon Opera House — officially the Ho Chi Minh City Municipal Theatre — is an ornate French colonial building completed in 1897 and one of the finest 19th-century performance venues in Southeast Asia. It hosts the acclaimed AO Show, a contemporary Vietnamese circus blending bamboo acrobatics, traditional music, and visual storytelling — one of the best live performances in the country.
Get There
Located at 7 Lam Son Square, District 1, at the top of Dong Khoi Street. A 10-minute walk from Ben Thanh Market; walking distance from most District 1 hotels. Easily reached by Grab.

The surrounding Dong Khoi area is HCMC's most upmarket hotel district. The Caravelle, Continental, and several other historic hotels are within a block of the opera house.

**Shows:** The AO Show runs most evenings (check schedule at luneproduction.com). Tickets from around 400,000–900,000 VND depending on seat tier.
**The building itself:** Not open for general visits outside of performances, but the exterior on Lam Son Square is worth seeing — especially at night when it is lit up. The square in front is a popular evening gathering spot.
**AO Show:** 75-minute contemporary circus performance combining bamboo pole acrobatics, traditional Vietnamese village scenes, and live music. Genuinely impressive and suitable for all ages.
**Tips:** Book tickets in advance during peak season. Arrive early to enjoy the square and facade before the show. Smart-casual dress is appropriate.
