August continues July’s peak season — warm, busy, and energetic. The Independence Day long weekend at the end of the month creates one of the year’s biggest domestic travel surges; outside that period, August is similar to July with slightly higher rain chances. The beaches are warm, the bay tours are running to full capacity, and the harbour seafood scene is excellent. Plan around morning activities and evening harbour meals.

Best Things to Do in Cat Ba in August
Lan Ha Bay
August’s warm water (28°C) makes Lan Ha Bay swimming at its most comfortable — the hidden beaches inside the karst lagoons are excellent for a swim and snorkel, and the overnight junk tour gives sunset and sunrise views over the limestone landscape that are worth the boat. The bay is at peak capacity in August, particularly around the Independence Day weekend. The more remote sections of the bay — the eastern karsts away from the main Ha Long traffic — are worth the extra travel time for the relative quiet they offer even in August.

Cat Ba National Park
National park hiking in August is strictly an early morning activity — depart for Ngu Lam Peak no later than 6 AM to reach the summit before the heat builds and the cloud arrives. The Trung Trang Cave at the park entrance is a viable afternoon option even in August’s heat — the cave interior is cool and the stalactite formations are impressive. The white-headed langur is most active at dawn; arrange an early morning guided walk through the park’s forest section (separate from the peak trail) for the best chance of a sighting. Entry: 85,000 VND.

Cat Ba Island: Beaches & Hospital Cave
The Cat Co beaches in August are the warmest and most social of the year — swimming, snorkelling, and the beach bar scene are all at their peak. Hospital Cave makes a good afternoon alternative when the beach gets too hot or the shower arrives: the three-level underground complex operated as a fully functional military hospital through the war, and the engineering of concealment — hidden entrances, internal ventilation, emergency escape tunnels — is fascinating. Entry: 40,000 VND.

Also Worth Doing
- Monkey Island: Morning departure by speedboat from Cat Ba town — the beach is swimmable and the macaques are active; return before the afternoon shower
- Harbour seafood dinner: August evenings on Cat Ba’s waterfront are festive — fresh catch in the display tanks, cold beer, and a harbour view make for a memorable dinner
- Cannon Fort viewpoint: The short drive or walk to Cannon Fort above the town gives the best panorama of the harbour, bay, and surrounding islands — best at sunset
