March is the beginning of Cat Ba’s shoulder season — temperatures are rising, the days are getting longer, and the island is warming up toward the summer peak without yet being busy. It’s an excellent month for the full range of Cat Ba experiences: the national park hikes, the Lan Ha Bay cruise, the beaches, and the Hospital Cave tour are all comfortable and uncrowded. March’s equal 12-hour days and mild 18–23°C temperatures make it one of the most well-balanced months of the year to visit.

Best Things to Do in Cat Ba in March
Lan Ha Bay
March is widely considered one of Lan Ha Bay’s best months — the water temperature is rising, the skies are increasingly clear, and the bay is entering its pre-summer peak without the crowds that arrive in June–August. Kayaking through the limestone karst islands is particularly good in March: the calmer water and moderate temperatures make longer paddling routes viable, and the hidden beaches and lagoons inside the hollow islands are rewarding to explore. A two-day junk tour departing from Cat Ba town is the most complete way to experience the bay.

Cat Ba National Park
March’s mild temperatures and low humidity make the national park’s hiking trails at their most comfortable. The Ngu Lam Peak summit trail (moderate difficulty, 5 km return) gives panoramic views over the limestone peaks, the bay, and the Cat Ba town below — on a clear March morning, the views extend across to Ha Long Bay in the north. The Trung Trang Cave system at the park entrance is geologically impressive; the forested interior is lush and the air is clear. Entry: 85,000 VND; guide recommended for the peak trail.

Cat Ba Island: Hospital Cave & Cannon Fort
Hospital Cave is a standard Cat Ba stop that repays genuine attention — the three-storey underground complex was operational throughout the war while invisible from the air, serving as hospital, command centre, and bomb shelter simultaneously. March’s mild temperatures make the 100+ step climb to the entrance easy. After the cave, the short drive (or uphill walk) to Cannon Fort above the town gives the best panoramic views of Cat Ba harbour, the surrounding islands, and Lan Ha Bay beyond. Entry to each: 40,000 VND.

Also Worth Doing
- Cat Co Beaches: March’s warming water makes the Cat Co beaches viable for swimming — Cat Co 1 is the largest and most accessible, connected to Cat Co 2 and 3 by a coastal walkway
- Viet Hai Village cycling: The forested valley road to the remote fishing village is at its most lush in March’s humidity; hire a bicycle from Cat Ba town for the 18 km ride
- Monkey Island: Wild macaques, a viewpoint rock climb, and a quiet beach — the 15-minute boat crossing from Cat Ba town is easy in March’s calm conditions
Practical Tips for March
- Pre-peak value: March accommodation prices are lower than summer peak while conditions are excellent — a good time to book a junk boat overnight tour
- National park guide: The white-headed langur is most easily spotted with a local guide who knows the feeding routes; arrange through the park entrance
- Easter weekend: Late March sees slightly more visitors — book accommodation a few days ahead if dates overlap
