Ma Pi Leng Pass

March is an excellent month for Ma Pi Leng Pass — the air is clear, the temperatures are comfortable for a slow motorbike ride along the canyon rim, and the Nho Que River gorge is visible in its full 1,000-metre depth. The spring vegetation is beginning on the canyon walls; the terraces above the pass are freshly planted and green. The viewpoint above the canyon gives the classic Ha Giang Loop image — the emerald-green river in its limestone gorge — in March’s good light. The 20-km section from Dong Van to Meo Vac via the pass is the loop’s most spectacular drive at any time of year.

Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark

March’s Dong Van Geopark is in its spring transition — the grey winter limestone is beginning to green with new vegetation, the air is clear, and the plateau drives give excellent views of the karst formation in the best seasonal light. The H’mong King Palace (Vuong Palace) in Dong Van — a preserved early 20th-century residence of the Hmong king — is a worthwhile stop for its architecture and history; the Sunday market continues drawing minority traders from the surrounding villages. The plateau’s geological formations are clearly visible in March’s good visibility before summer haze arrives.

Hoang Su Phi Terraces

The Hoang Su Phi terraced rice fields — on the western side of Ha Giang province, away from the main Dong Van loop — are in early spring planting in March. The terraces are filled with water for the new planting, creating a mirror-like quality on the hillside in March’s clear light. Hoang Su Phi is one of Vietnam’s finest rice terrace landscapes and receives far fewer visitors than Sapa — the terraces and minority villages (La Chi, Dao, Nung) feel genuinely undiscovered. March’s planting water reflections are one of the terrace’s most photogenic seasons.
