Da Nang in May: Hottest Month, Beach Season & Transition to Rains

May is Da Nang’s transition month — the dry season gives way to the first rains, temperatures peak at their highest of the year, and the city shifts into a more local, less tourist-heavy pace. Rain falls mainly as afternoon showers rather than sustained downpours, and the beach is still warm and swimmable. For travellers who don’t need guaranteed sunshine, May offers excellent value and a more authentic version of Da Nang life.

Best Things to Do in Da Nang in May

My Khe Beach

May’s warm sea and long daylight hours make the beach the natural centre of Da Nang life — swim in the morning, shelter from the afternoon heat with a beach-shack lunch, and return for a cooler evening stroll. The beachfront seafood restaurants are at their liveliest in May evenings: fresh grilled fish, steamed clams, and cold beer at plastic-stool spots right on the sand. Water sports operators run through the month.

Marble Mountains

Go early in May — the Marble Mountains are best before 9 AM when the caves are cool and the hilltop views are clear before any cloud builds. The complex is less crowded than in January–April and the surrounding countryside looks lush as the first rains green up the vegetation. The stone carving workshops at the base of the mountains are active year-round — worth browsing for locally made marble pieces. Entry: 40,000 VND.

Museum of Cham Sculpture

A reliable option for May’s hot afternoons — the air-conditioned museum gives a welcome break from the heat while providing one of the most interesting cultural experiences in Da Nang. The collection of Cham sculptures includes pieces from My Son, Dong Duong, and other sites across central Vietnam; the carved figures of Shiva, Vishnu, and the Cham goddess Po Nagar are the highlights. Entry: 60,000 VND.

Hai Van Pass

May is the last reliable month for the Hai Van Pass before the rainy season makes the mountain road unpredictable. Go in the early morning when the summit is clear — by afternoon cloud often caps the mountain. The views over Da Nang Bay to the south and the Lang Co lagoon to the north are superb on clear mornings; the French-era fort at the summit gives a good vantage point. Motorbike or hired car; allow half a day.
