December in Da Nang is still rainy season. The city averages about 218 mm of rain over 19 days in December, about half of November’s total but nearly three times January’s. Temperatures are mild, around 20–25°C.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go. It means you need a flexible plan. The second half of December is usually better than the first, the city is lively over Christmas and New Year, and Hoi An is 45 minutes away. But if beach days are the reason for your trip, Da Nang in December is a gamble.

- It’s still rainy season. About 19 rainy days in December. Late December is usually better than early December.
- Beach days aren’t guaranteed. The sea is often rough, with red flags on the beach. Don’t plan a beach holiday around December.
- Ba Na Hills can be cold and foggy. Check the forecast the day before and go on the clearest morning.
- Dragon Bridge’s fire show still runs at 9pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
- Hoi An’s full-moon lantern night is Tuesday 22 December 2026.
- 1 January 2027 is a Friday, the only holiday of the season, and Da Nang fills with domestic visitors that weekend.
- My blunt verdict: fine for a city-and-food stop on a longer trip. For a beach holiday, go from February to August instead.

December is the tail end of central Vietnam’s rainy season. Rain usually comes as long grey spells of drizzle and showers rather than tropical downpours, with clearer days in between. Sunshine is limited: about 95 hours in the whole month.
Big floods are much less likely than in October and November, but not impossible. After the record floods of late October 2025, flooding hit the region on and off until early December. If there’s a typhoon or heavy rain warning, follow local news and the national weather service (NCHMF) before you travel.
What to pack: a light rain jacket, quick-dry clothes, sandals you don’t mind getting wet, and a warm layer for Ba Na Hills and windy evenings by the river.
What still works in Da Nang in December
1. Food
Da Nang is a great food city in any weather. A bowl of mì Quảng or bún chả cá on a grey afternoon is exactly right.
2. Museum of Cham Sculpture
The best rainy-day sight in the city: sandstone sculptures from the Cham kingdoms, some more than a thousand years old. Allow an hour or two.
3. Marble Mountains
Five limestone hills with caves and pagodas, about 20 minutes south of the center. The caves are fine in light rain, but the steps get slippery, so wear shoes with grip.
4. Dragon Bridge fire show
The bridge’s dragon breathes fire and then water at 9pm every Saturday and Sunday, and usually on public holidays too. It lasts about five minutes. The bridge closes to traffic around 8:45pm, so arrive by 8:30pm. The east bank is the drier spot to watch from; near the head on the bridge you’ll get wet. In December 2026, the weekend shows are on 5–6, 12–13, 19–20 and 26–27 December.
5. Hoi An, on a dry day
Hoi An is 45 minutes away and has the same weather as Da Nang. On Tuesday 22 December 2026, the old town holds its full-moon lantern night, when the electric lights go off and the river fills with paper lanterns. Lunar dates can shift by a day, so confirm that week. See Hoi An in December.
6. Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge, if the forecast is clear
Ba Na Hills sits at about 1,400 m, so it’s much colder than the city and often in cloud in December. You can pay the full ticket and see nothing but fog. Go only on a clear day, first thing in the morning, and bring a jacket.
7. The beach, on the good days
My Khe beach is long and easy to reach from the city center, but in December the northeast monsoon often brings big waves. Swim only where lifeguards are on duty and never on red-flag days. On calm, sunny days, it’s still lovely for a walk at sunrise.
Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Da Nang
Christmas isn’t a public holiday, so everything is open. Vietnamese people still love to decorate, and on Christmas Eve young people dress up and ride around the city on motorbikes to enjoy the lights. The pink Da Nang Cathedral on Tran Phu Street is the center of it, and the riverside along Bach Dang is lit up. Even in the rain, it’s a lively night out, not a quiet one.
For the 2026 New Year, the city ran a five-day festival from 30 December to 3 January, with music and street performances on Bach Dang walking street over three nights and a night run along the Han River on New Year’s Eve.
1 January 2027 is a Friday and the only public holiday of the season. Expect hotels and flights to be busier for the long weekend.
Where to stay in Da Nang in December
