Ha Long Bay in April: Warm Swimming, Peak Cave Conditions & Pre-Summer Value

April is Ha Long Bay at its pre-summer best — warm enough for swimming in the bay’s hidden beaches and lagoons, clear enough for the best cave and viewpoint visibility, and still well ahead of the July–August peak crowds. The Hung Kings Festival (4 and 16 April) and Reunification Day (30 April) bring an uptick in domestic visitors; outside those dates, April is excellent value and excellent conditions. One of the top three months to visit.

Best Things to Do in Ha Long Bay in April

Ti Top Island

April’s warm temperatures and long days make Ti Top Island’s summit climb one of the year’s best. The 400-step ascent is comfortable in the April morning air, and the summit panorama — 360° over the limestone karst archipelago — is exceptional in the clear pre-summer light. After the summit, the crescent beach at the base has warm enough water for swimming in April: the bay temperature reaches 23–24°C, making it genuinely comfortable for a swim. The combination of summit views and beach swimming makes Ti Top a half-morning well spent.

Sung Sot Cave

Sung Sot is at its best in April’s comfortable temperatures — the staircase approach, the two cave chambers, and the exit platform with bay views are all easy to appreciate without the heat and crowding of July. The cave’s two enormous chambers — the second reaching 30 metres in height — are reliably impressive; April’s moderate lighting conditions give the stalactite formations their most natural appearance. Go in the morning to avoid the afternoon groups.

Hidden Beach Kayaking

April’s warm water makes kayaking through the hollow limestone karsts into hidden lagoons and beaches a genuinely excellent activity. Many of the bay’s most spectacular spots — the beaches inside hollow karsts, the lagoons accessed through low rock tunnels — are accessible only by kayak. April’s warming sea temperature makes stopping for a swim at these hidden beaches comfortable; the combination of paddling through the karst corridor and emerging into a private beach inside a limestone bowl is one of Ha Long Bay’s most memorable experiences.

Also Worth Doing

  • Bai Tu Long Bay: April is excellent for Bai Tu Long’s quieter eastern circuit — the same limestone landscape with far fewer boats
  • Floating villages: Cua Van and Vung Vieng are at their most accessible in April — the weather is good and the local fishing community is active
  • Seafood season: April marks the beginning of peak seafood season on the bay — the fresh catch served on overnight cruise boats is excellent

Practical Tips for April

  • Reunification Day weekend: Book accommodation and cruise at least 5 days ahead for 28 April–1 May
  • Best swim spots: Ask your cruise guide for the best hidden beach for a swim — these are not marked on maps and the guides know which lagoons are cleanest and most sheltered
  • Seafood on the boat: The overnight cruise meal of fresh bay seafood is one of the itinerary’s highlights — confirm with your operator what’s included
