Thuy Tien Abandoned Water Park
A surreal urban-exploration site 7km from Hue — a defunct water park built in 2004 with a giant dragon rising from the lake, graffiti-covered slides, and a crocodile aquarium long since emptied.
Overview
Thuy Tien water park opened in 2004, operated briefly, and then mysteriously closed despite costing millions to build. It has since become one of Vietnam’s most photographed urban-decay sites. The centrepiece is a massive dragon sculpture that emerges from the middle of the lake; its belly once housed a live crocodile aquarium, now filled with graffiti and broken glass. Climb the internal staircase to the dragon’s mouth for a sweeping view over the water.

Practicalities
- Entry: 20,000 VND + 10,000 VND parking
- Waiver: Visitors sign a liability waiver at the gate
- Walk to dragon: ~10 minutes on a dirt path from the entrance
- Distance from Hue: ~7km south of the city centre — easy by motorbike or taxi
- Finding it: Thuy Tien Lake is accurately marked on Google Maps
Tips
Bring plenty of water — the site is fully exposed with no shade. Avoid visiting at midday in summer. Combine with Hue Mural Village a few kilometres away for a full half-day outing.
