April is Ha Giang’s most vibrant spring month — the terraces are lush with new rice, the mountain passes are green and flowering, and the temperatures are warm enough for comfortable motorbike travel without the summer rain and humidity. The Hung Kings Festival (4 and 16 April) and Reunification Day (30 April) bring increased domestic visitors; outside those dates, April is excellent. Best Things to Do in Ha Giang in April

Ma Pi Leng Pass

April’s Ma Pi Leng Pass is at its most vivid — the canyon walls are green from the spring vegetation, the Nho Que River below is an intense emerald in the spring light, and the terraces above the pass are a vivid spring green. The rapeseed flowers on some sections of the plateau add yellow splashes to the palette. April’s warm temperatures make the motorbike ride along the canyon rim comfortable; the viewpoint above the gorge is outstanding in the clear spring air. The pass is busier than March but still far less crowded than the summer-domestic peak.

Quan Ba Heaven Gate

Quan Ba Heaven Gate — the first major viewpoint on the Ha Giang Loop, about 45 km from Ha Giang city — is at its most lush and green in April. The gate pass viewpoint looks down over the Quan Ba Valley with the distinctive Twin Mountains (Nui Doi, the “Fairy Mountains”) rising from the valley floor. In April’s spring green, the valley is vivid and the mountains are fully vegetated; the pass itself is surrounded by flowering vegetation. Stop for the view; the descent into the valley gives an excellent ground-level perspective of the unusual twin peaks.

Hoang Su Phi Terraces

April’s Hoang Su Phi terraces are in full spring growth — the rice planted in March is now growing, giving the terraced hillsides a vivid green staircase quality against the mountain backdrop. La Chi and Dao minority village women work the terraces in traditional dress; the combination of the terrace landscape, the minority culture, and the April spring colours makes this one of the finest photographic destinations in northern Vietnam. Much quieter than Sapa even in April; the terraces and minority homestays feel genuinely undiscovered.
